Education, Inequalities, and Freedom, is an
extension of critical educational discourse in Pakistan. It underscores
the role of education as a powerful socio-political phenomenon that is linked
with power, politics, hegemony, resistance, and freedom. The book suggests
that how education, which is believed to be a tool of emancipation, is in
fact involved in further widening the socioeconomic gaps in the society.
The book calls for a major shift in the concept of knowledge, pedagogical
practices, and assessment norms prevalent in our schools. To tackle the
enormous challenge of social change, schools need to reposition themselves by
making use of other social institutions and linking their pedagogies to
non-formal and informal sources of knowledge. The book is divided into
nine thematic parts which include Education and Politics; Inequalities and
Stratifications; Education and Development; Teachers, Control, and Freedom;
Language and Power; Politics of Educational Reforms; Education and Hegemony;
Myths and Slogans; and Exploring Alternatives.
What education experts say about the book:
Dr Tariq Rahman
Distinguished National Professor, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore.
Dr Rubina Saigol
Writer and Researcher in Social Development As an act of culturalization, education is multidimensional in its nature and impact. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui is among the very few in Pakistan who have a broad and deep understanding of the issues and challenges in education, both in theory and in practice. His incisive articulation is a great help to those who wish to comprehend the complexity of the educational landscape in its fullness.
A.H. Nayyar
Lahore University of Management Sciences Shahid Siddiqui’s book is an excellent attempt to challenge our world view about education, teaching and learning and explore alternatives for transforming education. It introduces a number of innovative ideas which are critical but constructive and revolutionary. Dr Siddiqui’s book is a welcome addition in the domain of critical education keeping in view the dearth of critical perspective-based publications in Pakistan. I am certain that academics, students, researchers and policymakers in the field of education will benefit enormously from the wisdom shared by the author.

There are certain areas in the field of EDUCATION which are never touched with reference to Pakistan and generally there is scarcity of books on Education in the context of Pakistan. Book on critical educational discourse in Pakistan entitled Education, Inequalities, and Freedom by Professor Dr. Shahid Siddiqui is the most important work and highlights important issues of the education system of the country. This book provides food for thought to Policy makers, Educationists, Researchers, Curriculum developers, Teacher educators, Teachers etc. I am sure that this book is a landmark on the social issues of education in Pakistan.

ReplyDeleteInfact the book written by Dr Shahid Siddique is going to be masterpiece on the critical discourse of education in Pakistan and how education has been/is being manipulated to create discrimination, inequality and disparity among the people of this country. The actual role of eduation is to bridge the gape in society but in our context how education is being utilized and channelized to widen the gape in society. As a student of master of Education at Aga khan University where Dr Shahid Siddique has remained a senior faculty, i am looking forward impatiently to read this eye opening book.
ReplyDeleteEducation in Pakistan has remained the less patronage for government policies. On the other hand there is direct link with socio-economic development and education of a country. Education not only liberates human mind from stereotype myths and superstitions but it also equips individuals with necessary and relevant skills to live prosperous and healthy life. Thus education brings social justice and equality through economic stability and vice versa. But in our country the situation is reciprocal. Instead of bridging the gap in society, our education system has been and is being manipulated as a tool for widening social, economic, and mental gapes. The book written by Dr Shahid Siddique is going to be a masterpiece in igniting critical discourse on this critical aspect of education. As a student of Master of Education at Aga Khan University, I am impatiently looking forward to read this extremely important book.

ReplyDeleteThanks Arif for your comments:)
ReplyDeleteHegemony and control become ever so dangerous and resilient when they are so covert that they are normalised in a society. As the society accepts inequality as normal or remain incognizant of its origin and practices, the room for human agency and change is resteicted. Dr Siddiqui's contribution in critical studies in education and language offer a rare but much needed perspective in Pakistan which touches upon the significant and often unrealised fundamental connections between education, social stratification, and hegemonic practices which perpetuate status quo. He is one of a rare breed of social thinkers who also have an overt social agenda.
ReplyDeleteCan we've a soft copy of this book as we are students.
